WHO I AM MATTERS

  • Describe where you come from: My mom and dad are both immigrants from the Korean countryside, but they ended up meeting on Olympic in Koreatown.
  • Tell me where you're going: My main goal after completing my last few kpop touring contracts is to become a firefighter for the LAFD.
  • Tell me how you plan to get there: I have already completed the certification for EMT-Basic and I am planning to enlist into the army for veteran's preference as well as using the tuition assistance to put me through a fire science associate's degree.
  • How are you LIKE your parents: I believe I have the same perseverance and patience as my father and I balance that with the kindness of my mom.
  • How are you UNLIKE your parents: I really have no aspirations to be an entrepreneur like my mom and dad- the lifestyle that I've experienced was way too volatile.
  • Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?: I think the stereotype of tiger parents in the asian community definitely holds true- and I found myself pushing myself more for my parents' approval. However, as I am getting older I find myself more comfortable carving out my own path.
  • Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?: I am lucky to have met my friend Daniel Desure who owns a creative agency. He understands how to exist in a state of constant creativity and passion without burning out. He is 45 and still one of the most creative people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. You can see the gears turning in his head constantly, and his works reflect his passion.
  • What is one thing that really gets on your nerves, pisses you off, makes you see red?: When people don't let me merge on the 110.
  • Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?: The Peregrine Falcon, I would always see them perched in the oak trees behind my grandmother's house in Korea. I love the outdoors and they became a nostalgic symbol of adventuring through the woods with my cousins.
  • Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.: I would spend springs harvesting garlic from my grandmother's fields and hang them to dry in her courtyard. I remember the smell of fresh garlic, my grandmother's gnarled hands, and feeling very alive.

  2. Hi Brandon,
That’s awesome! Super cool path going from K-pop touring to wanting to be a firefighter. Definitely impressive for already getting EMT certified too. Also love the falcon and garlic memories. Way cooler than my childhood tree swing that just scraped me up...

  6. Hi Brandon!
It's really cool to hear that both of your parents were entrepreneurs and that you seek to break the mold because it wasn't for you. I think it can be really hard to break out of the norm to pursue your own passions. Your descriptions of your animal and nature connections are so vivid! I love how your personal experiences read as so picturesque in just a couple sentences.
